Having grown up on both the west and east coasts of the United States Joe Sackville developed a keen sense of place from a very young age. He has been traveling and taking photos virtually his entire life and his carefully composed images deftly capture the subtle details that convey the essence of the location he is shooting.

“I like playing with the concept that taking a photograph captures the exact likeness and context of the subject,” says the artist.

“But by manipulating the aperture, focus and color at the time the photo is taken, the image can be transformed into something quite distinct from its original appearance. Looking at my photos, an observer may not initially be able to decipher the image, but they are drawn to discover its true identity.”

Joe divides his time between residences in New York and Florida and typically spends several months a year traveling and photographing abroad. His photographs have been available commercially since the mid 1990s.
